What travel was like before the internet

When I started solo traveling overseas, it's difficult or expensive to use internet service through my cellphone or smartphone.
So, I printed many maps and phone numbers about locations of hotel, ambassador, sightseeing spots, and railway stations.
It's convenient to be able to avoid almost all of preparations for traveling by smartphone.
But, if we lose it during the trip, it's nightmare.
