Why is the new station called "Osaka Station"

うめきた(大阪)地下駅」と「大阪駅」の改札内連絡通路の整備並びに「うめきた(大阪)地下駅」の駅名について

Development(2nd phase) of western area of Osaka Station is proceeding along with the construction of the new station and tracklaying of Tokaido Line's branch under the ground floor. JR West opened Osaka Station City in 2011, and began development of western area of Osaka Station on December ,2019 to make the biggest station in West Japan convenient and bustling eternally as the gateway of Osaka.
We'd like to inform you of the new station built along with underground work of Tokaido Line's branch, corridor between the new exit locating west side of the current Osaka Station ,and the station name.

1. Jointing corridor in paid area between Umekita Station(Tentative name) and Osaka Station
The new station "Umekita" will be connected with the new exit of the current Osaka Station by underground corridor equipped with elevators and escalators. It will make Osaka Station more convenient after opening of the new station in 2023 and Naniwasuji Line in 2031, which adds more train destinations such as for Wakayama and Kansai International Airport.

2. The name of "Umekita" Station
The construction of the corridor means unification of the current Osaka Station and Umekita Station.
Therefore, the new station will be named "Osaka Station"
※Umekita Station will open as Osaka Station in 2023. "Umekita Station" will also be used in the news on this website

3. Scheduled events
Summer of 2020: the construction of the corridor begins
Spring of 2023: Umekita Station will open as Osaka Station
The corridor opens
The new exit partially opens
Summer of 2024: 2nd phase of the development will be completed along with full opening of the new exit
Spring of 2031: Naniwasuji Line opens

There are many kinds of rumor about the name of the new station. But, as the result, it just became the same station as the current Osaka Station.
