I think that parallel careers are especially needed for athletes. If an athlete lose physical function due to accidents or disease, the one won't get job which is better than normal job.
Additionally, if an athlete were to be fired by a team, the one will confront difficulties to find a job.
So, Sharapova's motivation to study at Harvard is highly evaluated.
Having a couple of skills will help her under sabbatical.
