My professor told me to improve my grades

Yesterday evening, I was sleeping with sitting on a chair. Then, my professor came into the room I was in. He began to talk about recommendation of my giving a presentation. I was puzzled about what to say. Suddenly, he changed the topic.
He asked me "Why can't you get a better grade in the exam of graduate school?"
I replied I had studied harder than ever. To be honest, it is true that I had been sometimes idle in the exam of junior high school, high school and college. But, I had studied harder in studing for the exam of graduate school.

He said "I'm sorry for telling you that you got the lowest score on the science test in group who passed the exam. But, you were rescued by your English score. If it hadn't been for the English test, you must have failed the exam. So, you have to spend the graduate school days with keeping your situation in mind. Do your best."

I talked with my senior researcher about the conversation. He commented "Those professors as he can't understand groups who can't get better grades even if they study harder."
His statement reminds me of students I teach at the preparatory school. There are many students who can't memorize a kind of knowledge even if I tell them repeatedly. And, That seems to be applied to me.
