Probably, he has a regret that US defeated Japan in WW2. When we consider the fact that he is famous as a nationalist as to look down on countries which won WW2, the incident is not surprising.
It is often said that sports' matches should not be associated with political issues. Whether I don't know he agree with that, I think his statement is a shame of Japanese.
