Letter arrives more than 100 years after being posted

Even now logistics around the world are not always on time. For example, we often hear lost baggage at airports around the world.
So, it can be more inaccurate, when it comes to postal system 100 years ago. It means that there must be other mails which haven't yet arrived at their final destinations. I wonder where they went.
