In 1980s or 1990s, I guess Mainland China was enjoying subtle freedom of speech. There used to be criticism against government, and traditional Chinese letters in Shenzhen to persuit the stylish culture in Hong Kong.
But, the government is now trying to be wary of freedom of speech and Westernization.
