Why astronomers are interested in this mysterious signal

If they received the signal, I wonder why they don't try to send the signal to its origin with the same frequency?
If it's really transmitted from the planet, unidentified life would send us back a kind of signal, though it will need nearly 7 or 8 years to receive.
