JR West unveiled the plan to unify fare calculation system in urban and suburban area in Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe by spring in 2025.

[JR西日本]「京阪神地区の運賃体系を統一」とマスコミ各社報道、2025年春メド
JR West unveiled the plan to unify fare calculation system in urban and suburban area in Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe by spring in 2025.
https://dia.seesaa.net/article/503096526.html

(Summary begins)
Current fare systems on JR West lines in Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe area are classified into many types of fare systems, which are fare system for main lines based on distance, fare system only for Osaka Loop Line, specially discounted section and so on.
If we summarize reports from each mass media, JR West will try to create new fare system by unifying these fare systems. It will result in higher fare than the current fare on Osaka Loop line and specially discounted sections and lower fare than these current fare for main lines.
It's unclear if JR West will revise fare for specially discounted sections to compete with paralleling private railways.
(Summary ends)

I guess complicated fare system itself is not inconvenient for passengers. Rather than that, additional tickets needed for limited express, special cars, and special seats would look much more complicated for visitors.

Brunei firm pitches 1,600 km high-speed rail linking Indonesia, Malaysia

I guess this high speed railway plan came out, because high speed railway "Whoosh" succeeded to attract more and more passengers.
The problem would be lack of population in each city along the high speed railway. But, after relocation of the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, population will increase dramatically.

Siemens to upgrade København S-bane for driverless operation

https://www.railwaygazette.com/suburban-and-commuter-rail/siemens-to-upgrade-k%C3%B8benhavn-s-bane-for-driverless-operation/66396.article

If driverless vehicle is feasible, driverless train must be easier to be realized, since driverless train do not have to think about direction of running and basically no sudden obstacles appear ahead of the train.

I will this installation of the driverless train in København could be breakthrough for remaining railway companies around the world.

Estimated opening year of the extension of Hokkaido Shinkansen to Sapporo is pushed back from 2030 to "Unknown"

北海道新幹線の札幌延伸開業、2030年度末から「未定」へ 小樽―長万部間の並行在来線廃止も「未定」?
Estimated opening year of the extension of Hokkaido Shinkansen to Sapporo is pushed back from 2030 to "Unknown",
which means that abolishment of the existing conventional line between Otaru and Oshamanbe is also "Unknown"

According to the local news paper, JRTT and the ministry of land and transportation are ready to announce giving up of the opening of the section between Sapporo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, which is under construction next week. Opening year will not be announced. Then, extension of Hokkaido Shinkansen is "pending".

Last Autumn, it was revealed that construction is halted due to huge hard rocks found in the Hirafu section in Youtei Tunnel between Kucchan and Niseko in Shiribeshi Subprefecture. Construction was restarted though, the completion year is 4 years behind the schedule. Furthermore, they have difficulty to tackle with soft ground in Oshima Tunnel between Yakumo and Hokuto in Oshima Subprefecture.

Effects on the construction are not only above things but also below things.
Rapidus Plant under construction in Chitose City is expected to lure more human resources to build the Shinkansen.
The other factor is that more strict upper limit of overtime work is enforced from 2024. Lack of human resources needed for building viaducts and electric hardware stations is expected.

Future use of the paralleling conventional railways have not yet been decided. Association led by Hokkaido Prefectural Authority agreed with abolishment of the section between Otaru and Oshamanbe, and abolishment of passenger service between Oshamanbe and Hakodate to make it dedicated to freight train.
But, the section between Otaru and Oshamanbe includes the congested section between Yoichi and Otaru with more than 2000 passengers per day. Due to serious shortage of bus drivers, local bus company showed concern to undertake bus service for abolished section.

During the vacation season in winter, some trains were operated with 3 cars, instead of the usual 2 cars, bacause of the crowd of foreign tourists.
This situation will make it more difficult to abolish the section.

On the other hand, the section between Oshamanbe and Hakodate is the main route of the freight trains connecting Honshu(Main Island of Japan) and Hokkaido. Abolishment of the section means extermination of the freight trains, which can cause skyrocketing price of vegetables around the greater Tokyo. Despite the fact, No one has decided who operates the section after extension of Hokkaido Shinkansen to Sapporo. Furthermore, the abolishment of the passenger trains between Oshamanbe and Hakodate will make it more difficult to prepare bus drivers for alternative buses, due to shortage of the bus drivers. The issue is similar to the case of the section between Otaru and Oshamanbe.

There are tons of the issues that should be solved like the plan of through service of Hokkaido Shinkansen to Hakodate Station. But, this announcement gives us more time to think about the issue including abolishment of the existing conventional lines.

The next opening of Shinkansen(High speed rail) will be more than 10 years later, due to this announcement.

In Japan, installation of luxurious seats seem to be not only common among commuter rails but also among high speed trains.

Test running of electric train on Caltrain started

CALTRAIN, BALFOUR BEATTY AND PG&E CELEBRATE MAJOR MILESTONE OF ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT
https://railway-usa.com/news/79622-caltrain,-balfour-beatty-and-pg-e-celebrate-major-milestone-of-electrification-project-with-successful-energization-and-testing-of-full-51-mile-caltrain-corridor

Electrification of the Caltrain is important not only for Caltrain itself, but also for California High Speed Rail, because the latter shares the same track with the former railway.
But, considering the speed and frequency of Caltrain, it must be difficult to make both of the trains run on the same track.

Seoul Station train collision involving KTX, 287 passengers transferred

The investigation of the root cause should be focused on if the ATS system(Automatic Train Stopping System) worked correctly or not.
Judging from the image on the article, Mugunghwa train crashed into KTX with slow speed. So, if the system had worked correctly, this accident could not have happened.
