Why does it take a long time to transport freight by trains between Western and Eastern?

Time consuming thing on Euro-Asia rail transportation is gauge-changing systems. Trains running between China and Europe have to change bogies from ones for 1435mm to those for 1520mm just before entering Russia or CIS nations.
I wish there would be Free Gauge Locomotives and Free Gauge freight cars to skip such a troublesome procedures.
