Why is RER rapid?

STIF to drop RER branding

RER is the suburban rail of Paris. Though it has also the name of 'Tram Express', it's not rapid as a suburban rail, but rapider than tram.
The problem is that almost all of the trains stop at every station. Some trains departing from suburban edges had better skip some intermediate stations to make it rapider and promote more and more people living far away from Paris central.

Anyway, it's a good chance to recover the name value, because at least on Japanese guidebooks, some of the RER lines are described as 'poor safety' lines in terms of crime rates.
