Hong Kong's MTR is not the first railway company that commenced property development along its own rail lines. Pacific Electric would be the first, followed by major private railways in Japan. Though electric railways in the United States were declined after mortarization, Japan's private railways have flourished by property development.
Hong Kong's MTR seems to be different. In addition to property development along the rail lines, the company has founded joint companies in China, Sweden, and UK.

MTR's way to expand its developmental procedure is what Japan's Railway companies should learn to take part in overseas rail industry.

The answer lies in where the original longitude is.
So, either of the easternmost airport or the westernmost airport must be the nearest airport to International Date Line at the same time.
And, the easternmost airport would see sunrise for the first time, while the westernmost airport would do for the last time.

Though it's been difficult to travel both of them successively, it will be possible by rail, as long as China's authority permits.

It will be true that travellers emit much more carcon while traveling with the expansion of global tourism. But, some of the assumptions are dubious.
For example, the quote "It has been suggested that people consume more processed food and go for carbon-intensive transport options, rather than public transport when they travel."
Most of the global travelers will use public transportation in destinated countries, due to limitation of international driver's lisense.

But, as far as the current technology can cover, it's impossible to take measures for volcano eruption.
What we can do is just to evacuate to safer place. So, it's important to simulate evacuation routes before disaster happens.
